Title
Machine Learning and Medical Diagnosis: Affordable Medical Care

Research Question
How can machine learning be implemented in an automated program to diagnose illnesses in areas that lack medical foundation and resources?

Summary
I want to be able to implement a program that would be able to diagnose illnesses with minimal help from humans. Using machine learning, a program could be made that would be able to give medical diagnosis to patients using information that the patient submits. Machine learning is a field of computer science that uses pattern recognition and computational learning theory to analyze data sets. A user (a patient) will input symptoms as well as their health record to the program. The program, with past data sets and the inputted data, will propose the most correct diagnosis to the patient. Some key terms that would be relevant to my research would be machine learning, extent of medical diagnosis, deep learning, statistics, data aggregation, data analysis, trend prediction, and medical reliability.
One question I plan to answer is: “How reliable would the program be compared to a medical professional?” A lot of dissenting opinions to a programmed diagnosis are its reliability. The disconnect between engineers and doctors seem to create the idea that engineers cannot be trusted to create a program that would be taking over the job of a trained professional. Another important question would be “what would be the total costs of implementing this system?”

Description
There are many places that lack resources to have a stable and reliable medical system. This program can be implemented at a low cost to provide helpful medical diagnosis to patients.
I chose this topic because I am adamant about finding a way to provide reasonable medical care to as many people as possible. I think that it is horrifying that many people die every day from diseases that are preventable or easily diagnosable. I think that this research can be implemented not only in areas that are lacking resources but also in areas that have abundant medical resources. It would create a way for any user to have an easy and fast way to access an almost professional diagnosis on any problems that he or she may have.

Position
I think that it is completely viable to create a reliable medical diagnosis program using machine learning algorithms. The medical diagnosis would be as good as one from a professional, and would be able to be implemented at low costs and resources. A diagnostic program using machine learning would be a great benefit to many places where there is a lack of resources or medical knowledge. It would aid in creating some sort of foundation to start building a reliable and stable medical system.
Tentative Thesis:
“Many areas in the world lack the resources or money. Machine learning used in conjunction with medical diagnosis could help these areas have a jump start in medical knowledge and resource.”

Audience
I imagine my audience to be investors and engineers that would be able to implement my vision, as well as the humanitarian public. The investors would be interested in a way to help areas as it would be a great investment as well as a way to promote themselves. The public in general would also be a good target audience as this program can be implemented in areas where there isn’t a complete lack of medical infrastructure. The program could provide a stress-free alternative to physically going to the doctors for small illnesses.

Challenges
Some concerns I have for my research is how I will find the most relevant sources for my project. I have found some relevant sources that relate to my topic at hand, but some tend to have a more narrow focus than what I am looking for. I will have to find relatable aspects of past research, and use them on my broader terms. Hopefully I will be able to stitch together a reasonable answer to my research question. Another challenge that I expect to face is staying on track with my purpose. As I look through more sources, I expect to be intrigued at many subtopics of my issue that may not merit being in my paper. I may end up adding irrelevant or extraneous information that only adds quantity and not quality to my paper.

Schedule and Timeline
I will be researching and skimming through texts for two hours on the weekdays, and compiling my information for two or so hours on weekends. I think that with four hours per week, I would be able to have a strong research and relevant information. Having weekdays set for purely research will allow me to keep a fresh eye on the topic, and keep myself interested.
